The Environmentalist in Me
It has been a whirlwind of a ride that it'll be easier if I'd use a timeline. So this is how things shaped me to be an environmentalist:
2007- To study Medicine at the best university in the country, I entered the Manila scene- traffic, air pollution, garbage, poverty...everything unpleasing that would make you thankful of the peaceful life in the rural.
2008- During a practice of the UP Medicine Choir, Renzo (Guinto) and I got to sit beside each other. I asked him about his lanyard from Germany (where he went after being one of the top 4 in Bayer Young Environmental Envoy) and from there, we shared our ideas about the numerous environmental and societal problems our city had until we decided to form UP One Earth- the first and only environmental organization in our campus. We were able to have an initial 100 members and we had various activities particularly the Recyclable Fairs which turned out to be a need of our community.
2009- I took the presidency of UP One Earth and led it to be the most visible and active organization in our campus. I also became part of the Bayer Young Environmental Envoy.
2010- I was elected as Councilor for Health & Environment of our University Student Council with which I carried out numerous projects, the most remarkable of which is the successful lobbying for a ban on the use of polystyrene in our campus. For this and other accomplishments, I was recognized as a Climate Hero by the Office of Senator Loren Legarda.
2011- I was elected as Chairperson of our University Student Council and was chosen as one of the five delegates from the Philippines to take part in Study of the US Institute on Global Environment Issues.
