Corny as it may sound but charming is what I'd definitely describe Ecocycle's Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHARM). Basically, as stated in their website www.ecocycle.org, CHARM is a one-stop drop for recycling unusual and traditional items. They partner with different recyclers and even advocacy groups that would reuse commonly turned over items. For example, they give away used cellular phones to a group of physically abused women so that these women would have something to use shall they need to call for help. Furthermore, CHARM continually expands the list of materials they accept for reuse or recycling. Currently, they have just added yoga mats to their list. They also have an online store where people could give and take used items for free. With a specific list and enough space or avenues for collection, CHARM maximizes the reuse and recycling of materials.
Being quite an obsessive-compulsive person, I have long envisioned something like this for our community. Seeing it being applied for so many years now in another community felt so real, instead of surreal. Because of this, I now have higher hopes that something like this could be implemented in our area too.
